Dartmouth Basketball Lands Victory in Union Case

Earlier this month, the Dartmouth men’s basketball team successfully earned the right to unionize after the National Labor Relations Board ruled in their favor. While other college teams have attempted to unionize in the past, this marks the first time that a college team has successfully earned the right to unionize to date.

So what does this mean? In short, it means that the NCAA has yet another hurdle to overcome if they are going to continue operating “business as usual”. Unions have been off the table for college athletes ever since the NCAA introduced the term “student-athlete” to avoid paying injured players worker’s compensation. Yet, after nearly six decades, the courts are starting to side with the kids rather than the adults.

Dartmouth is already in the process of appealing the decision and the NCAA is arguing that the Ivy League, given their lack of athletic scholarships, would be an isolated incident if upheld. While both organizations scramble to fight this ruling, the Men’s basketball team is poised to make their first vote as a union.

This story is far from over, but it does have the potential to be a massive domino in the college athletics landscape.
