Transitioning to College: The role of Executive Functioning Skills

Did you know that Executive Functioning Skills are the #1 indicator of long-term success?

Rachael Barron, at Effective Students, tells us that the late years of high school and early years of college are when students have the real opportunity to develop these skills through practice, success, struggles, and adjustments.     Self-awareness coupled with self- management is what can make freshman year of college a success or failure.

Skills for college success include:

  • developing time management skills within newfound independence

  • establishing boundaries with friends to attend to responsibilities

  • managing academic expectations including self-advocacy

  • developing self care protocols (fitness, sleep, food & mental health)

  • setting communication expectations with parents

Effective Students offers a summer course designed to help rising college freshmen transition to college effectively. Student-Athlete Advisors are able to provide a $49 discount for any of our network families for this class. Just use the code BCC-COLLEGE when registering here.
